Ain Shams University is the third oldest university in Egypt. It was established in July, 1950 as Ibrahim Pasha University. It cooperated with the other two universities; Cairo University (Foaad I Pasha University) and Alexandria University (Farouk I Pasha University) to achieve the university aims and accept the increasing number of applicants.
After the 23rd July, 1952 Revolution, it was suggested that the three universities should be named after historical places in Egypt. Thus in 21st February, 1954, the name of the university turned to Heliopolis and the same year it is changed to be Ain Shams ‘Eye of the Sun’ (its current name), the Arabic translation of Heliopolis or Own. Own University was established 5000 years ago. It was really famous for being a cultural center for knowledge especially Astrology, Engineering and Medicine. Amhotob was one of the tutors in that university. He was the main parson, minister and designer who designed the first stone architectural building known as Zuser in 2700 BC. The logo of the university consists of the obelisk and two hawks to symbolize its name and its old history. The obelisk symbolizes the house of life at Own City (Ain Shams) and the two hawks symbolize the house of Egyptian god at that time. Ain Shams University is located in Qasr El-Za’fran (Saffron Palace) district, which was built during Khedive Ismael Rein. The reason behind this name is because it was surrounded by saffron fields. This palace was used as the administration of the university in 1925.
