The 3 Different Ways of Communication that Affect Your Kid’s Behavior
Parents are their kids’ role models. Kids are always watching and listening to their parents, and are applying what they learn from them in their own behaviors. One of the main parts of discipline that every parent should take care of is learning how to talk to their kids. The way you talk affects your kid’s self-concept and shows how he/she will be treating others.
You may find that as a parent, you are using one or more of the following three methods of communication with your kids:
- Talking aggressively: You may be yelling a lot or using an aggressive tone with your kids.
The result:
- Your kids build up fear, especially towards you.
- Your kids yell back or ignore what you are ordering them to do.
- Your kids become stubborn by reacting opposite to what you want them to do.
- Talking passively: You may be using an exaggeratedly soft tone when talking to your kid. In addition, using cautious words, muttering when speaking to them in a low voice, and changing your opinion or requests from one time to another.
The result:
- Your kids take advantage of your passivity and walk over you.
- When your kid pushes your limits, you will most likely change your tone into the other extreme aggressive
- Talking assertively: This means that you are talking to your kid in a positive and clear manner. You are being consistent and warm in your communication, and are also confident and firm about what you are saying or asking them to do. This is the most successful way to talk to kids of all ages.
The result:
- Your kids listen to you attentively and clearly.
- Your kids trust your words and is encourages to do as you say or talk further with you.
